What is "Pay it Forward"?

Since the world can seem like an unfriendly, threatening place, yet we all want safety, health, and happiness for ourselves and our loved ones. How can one ordinary person—you or me—make a positive difference in this world? One way is the practice "paying it forward." In other words is when somebody does a nice thing for you and you "pay it forward" by doing a nice thing for the next person. You could do something nice for a total stranger and when they ask you how to pay you back, tell them to pay it forward instead.

One good deed might not seem like much, but if everyone did something good for someone else, then the cycle of generosity and kindness can spark us to become better people.

How does it work?

“Pay it forward” involves doing something good for someone in response to a good deed done on your behalf or a gift you received. When you pay it forward, however, you don't repay the person who did something nice for you. Instead, you do something nice for someone else. It doesn't have to mean giving a large some of money or expending a lot of effort. It could be as simple as holding the door for someone laden with bags or giving up a place in line to someone who appears in a rush.

One of the most important things that people should remember about this concept is that it should be done with a selfless spirit. This means that one person helps another without hoping for repayment or good deeds in return. The purpose of this movement is to inspire acts of kindness around the world. Imagine the difference that would make!
